Insurance and health benefits

Using health benefits to pay for home care.

You may already have health benefits that can help pay for eligible home-care services. Depending on your plan, they may be covered through extended health benefits.

Provider relationships

  • GreenShieldDirect submission of eligible claims, where the member’s plan and service permit
  • Canada LifeProvider relationship through providerConnect. Requirements depend on the member’s plan

Coverage and claim requirements depend on each member’s own plan. These relationships are not an endorsement by the insurer, and Tap’N’Care can’t guarantee coverage or reimbursement.

Could my benefits help?

  • Many employer and private extended health plans include some coverage for home care, personal support or nursing at home.
  • Plans set their own rules: yearly or per-visit limits, which professionals are eligible, and whether a doctor’s note is needed.
  • Only your insurer can confirm what your plan covers.

How Tap’N’Care can help.

  • Talk through what your plan says, and the questions worth asking your insurer.
  • Help you understand what documentation your plan may require, such as receipts or care details.
  • For GreenShield, submit eligible claims directly for you, where your plan and the service permit.
  • Confirm your rate in writing before care begins, so you can check it against your coverage.

We don’t decide coverage, and we can’t promise reimbursement.

How it usually works.

  1. Step 1: Check your plan

Call your insurer or read your benefits booklet. The questions below are a good place to start.

  2. Step 2: Gather what your plan requires

Some plans ask for a doctor’s note, a care assessment or specific receipts before they consider a claim.

  3. Step 3: Talk with Tap’N’Care

We’ll go through the documentation your plan may require, so there are fewer surprises later.

  4. Step 4: Arrange the claim

For GreenShield, we can submit eligible claims directly where your plan and the service permit. For other insurers, follow your plan’s claim process.

Questions to ask your insurer.

Have your plan or member number ready when you call.

  • Does my plan cover home care, personal support (PSW) or nursing at home?
  • Is there a yearly maximum, or a limit per visit or per hour?
  • Do I need a doctor’s note or referral before care starts?
  • Does the provider need to be registered with you?
  • Can the provider submit the claim, or do I pay first and claim it back?

Common questions.

Will my insurance pay for home care?

It depends on your plan. Many extended health plans include some coverage for home care, often with limits and conditions, but not every plan does and not every service is eligible. Your insurer is the only one who can confirm what is covered.

Which insurers do you have relationships with?

Tap’N’Care has provider relationships with GreenShield and Canada Life (providerConnect). That doesn’t mean those insurers automatically pay for care: coverage still depends on your own plan. If you have a different insurer, call us and we’ll talk through your options.

Can you submit the claim for me?

For GreenShield, Tap’N’Care can submit eligible claims directly where your plan and the service permit. For Canada Life (providerConnect) and other insurers, coverage and claim requirements depend on your plan. We’ll help you understand the documentation needed, and you submit the claim as your plan requires.

Can you guarantee my claim will be paid?

No. Coverage decisions are made by your insurer under the terms of your plan. We can help you understand what is usually needed, but we can’t guarantee reimbursement.

Are there other ways to help pay for care?

Publicly funded home care in Ontario is arranged through Ontario Health atHome, and private care can add to those hours. Some home-care costs may also qualify as medical expenses on your tax return. A tax professional can tell you what applies to you.

Does this apply to healthcare staffing?

No. Health benefits apply to private home care for individuals and families. Staffing for organizations is arranged and invoiced separately.

This page is general information, not insurance, tax or financial advice. Coverage is set by each plan, and not every service is covered under every plan. Please confirm eligibility with your insurer.
